History of the organization

Island Trust which is the acronym of ‘Indo Sri Lankan Development Trust’ is a registered charitable organization working in the Nilgiris district.

The Trust was registered in July 1984 to deliver relief and rehabilitation services to the Repatriates of Indian Tamil population who were returned to their mother country India from Sri Lanka by an agreement (pact) between the governments of India and Sri Lanka in the year 1964. By this agreement the Indian people who were working in the plantations of Tea, Coffee and Rubber were repatriated to India. The Indian Government helped them to settle down in different districts of Tamil Nadu and nearby states with housing and employment opportunities.

Education Support

Island Trust has supported the education of nearly 3500 children to get fundamental education and 750 young boys and girls to get higher education. Main outcome of our educational support to children was that not only they became qualified for gainful..

Housing & Sanitation

Island Trust has constructed 3500 houses with the financial support of SELAVIP, Belgium, Karl Kubel Stiftung, Germany and the Indian government funds until 2000. IT has also constructed more than 800 sanitary latrines with the government funds

Community Health

Island Trust has been implementing Community Health project since its inception in 1984. In fact the entry point of Island Trust in Nilgiris district was its Health Project. The first batch of Community Health Workers was trained by CMC, Vellore in 1985.

Island Trust has promoted a Children’s Network called ‘ Ilanthalir Children’s Federation’ in its working villages. Through this federation the children are formed into Children’s Clubs and given awareness education on Child Rights,
